Project: Drop In/Speak Out

Drop In/Speak Out is an interactive installation and spontaneous performance piece for children and their adult companions. Seated in public space, each adult/child pairing will engage in a short interview, amplified by microphone. The adult partner acts as interviewer, armed with three questions, to be assigned by the artists.

The first two questions may be on a range of topics, from current events to philosophy and beyond:

How old is the world?
What does the mayor of Toronto do?
How can we save the environment?
What do animals think?
How do you make bread?
What is important?
Where does your garbage go?
What is the best way to make money?
What is good and what is evil?
What is truth?
What is nothing?

The third question, however, remains constant: Do you have a question for me?

At the centre of this installation is the drive to amplify the voices of children, both literally and figuratively.

As children are encouraged to think and speak, so are adults encouraged to listen, allowing us a glimpse of the children’s world view. Further to this, the individuality of each child is nurtured, as voices are heard not as a collective, but rather one by one, giving each participant the opportunity to be heard. Here, children are challenged to think critically as they respond to questions about the world in which they live. They are also empowered to engage in a dialogue with their adult caregiver.

Drop In/Speak Out has a home especially within a larger event: is it is best consumed, engaged with, or participated in transitively. It can move from locations, or remain stationary.

Rather than a destination, Forum enriches the experience on the way.
